From Raw Wood to Finished Art: The Making of a Custom Cutting Board at Hunarmand™

This board now lives in our client’s kitchen — not just as a cutting surface, but as a centerpiece. Built from premium materials, guided by expertise, and crafted entirely by hand, it’s made to stand the test of time.

Some cutting boards are just kitchen tools. Others, like this one, are stories — handcrafted in stages, shaped by thoughtful choices, and made to last for generations.

This 20” x 20” end-grain cutting board wasn’t pulled from a shelf. It was built from the ground up — custom-sized, custom-designed, and custom-personalized for a customer who came to us with a vision, but needed help shaping the details.

Here’s how it came to life, one step at a time.

From Uncertainty to Clarity — Choosing the Right Woods

When the customer reached out, they weren’t sure which woods would suit them best. We walked them through our available options, explaining the visual appearance, strength, and characteristics of each.

After comparing samples and combinations, they settled on Mahogany for its deep richness and Mulberry for its bright, golden contrast. It was a beautiful pairing — bold yet balanced.

But when it came time to prepare the stock, we realized our Mulberry supply was slightly short. Rather than compromise on size or integrity, we recommended adding Oak into the mix — a subtle wood that blended beautifully with the original selection. The client agreed, and we moved ahead with Mahogany, Mulberry, and Oak as the final trio.

Shaping the Structure

The build began with surface-prepped boards. We milled them into long strips (Step 3), then arranged them in a preliminary pattern to visualize how the grains and tones would interact.

These strips were glued together into a single wide panel — the first “blank.”

Once cured, we sliced that panel into narrower strips again, but this time rotated each piece vertically so the end grain faced upward — the hallmark of a professional-grade cutting board.

End grain orientation allows the fibers to absorb knife impact and self-heal, making the board more durable and knife-friendly.

After arranging the end-grain blocks, we applied glue once more and clamped the whole piece tightly for the final glue-up.

Leveling, Facing & Precision Trimming

Once dry, the panel needed to be perfectly flat. We leveled the surface using a CNC router, taking thin passes until both sides were flush and consistent.

Then we trimmed the board to its exact final size:
📏 20 inches x 20 inches,
📐 1.5 inches thick,
🔲 with clean, square edges.

Adding Function — Handles and Edge Work

For such a large board, comfort matters. We added recessed handles on both sides using CNC, allowing the board to be lifted easily without interrupting its sleek profile.

Next, all edges were softened using a roundover bit, making the board comfortable to handle and safer to use.

Sanding the Surface Silky Smooth

Sanding is where the board truly begins to shine. Using belt and orbital sanders, we smoothed every surface and corner through progressive grits until the board felt like satin to the touch.

Personalized CNC Engraving

The customer wanted a subtle yet permanent mark of ownership. Using CNC technology, we engraved a monogram on the edge — crisp, clean, and deeply cut to last.

The Final Finish

After final inspection, we applied multiple coats of food-safe mineral oil and beeswax conditioner. The board transformed — the grain deepened, the contrast came alive, and the surface took on a smooth, protective sheen.

Ready for Use — and for Life

This board now lives in our client’s kitchen — not just as a cutting surface, but as a centerpiece. Built from premium materials, guided by expertise, and crafted entirely by hand, it’s made to stand the test of time.
